This photo of R. Carlos Nakai was created years ago for a magazine story. When I get an environmental portrait assignment I start off by researching the person and doing a short interview, usually on the phone. The challenge is to find a visually interesting location which has significance for the subject but is also convenient enough to get to and spend a couple of hours shooting. Sometimes the subject suggests the perfect location other times it requires a search and discussion. We photographed Nakai on Signal Hill in Saguaro National Park west.
